What Is Fear?

What is fear to you? In this month of Halloween, full of haunted houses, costumes and scary movies, fear seems to be the word of the month. However, when you think of fear, what springs to your mind?

Today, October 26, 2015 is the birth date of one of my superheros, Napoleon Hill. He was born in 1883. He spoke about fear and this is what he said:

Fears are nothing more than a state of mind.

I agree with that completely. What scares a 3 year old will most likely not scare me. But to that 3 year old mind, it’s very real. What scares me will mean nothing to the 3 year old. Each person fears something different. Even if it falls under the same heading, it’s still a very personal and very different fear.

We live in a day and age where things are very uncertain. Our economy is troubled. Our businesses are troubled. As Napoleon Hill reminds us in his many teachings, we have the power to overcome any trouble, any situation, any factor by simply changing the way we think. Don’t you just love how I used the word “simply” there like it’s just that simple?!

But in reality, it is simple. We are the only one thinking our thoughts. We are the only ones who can choose to change them. We are the only ones who know, in our own minds and psyches, what is fear. We are the only ones who know what fear looks like to us.

For today, let’s focus on thinking the kinds of thoughts we want to think and live. To celebrate Napoleon Hill’s birthday, let’s look at our lives, what is fear in our lives, and choose to rise above it. Since fear is nothing more than a state of mind, let’s choose to change our state of mind today. When a fearful thought comes in, let’s just think the exact opposite thought of that for at least 17 seconds. Try it. What have you to lose?
