My gratitude list for letter C can only contain one thing. C for cats. I love cats. I love big cats, little cats, house cats, wild cats and feral cats.
My first contact with a truly wild cat was when I was approximately eight years old. I was walking down a 3 mile dirt road that cars could not get down. I was going to visit a friend. I was walking with another friend and we were talking away as we went down the road. Suddenly we heard a very familiar growl. I snapped my head to the right and there was a cougar sitting on a rock, in pounce position, staring at us. It could not have been more than 10 feet away from me. My friend took off like a shot screaming, “RUN RUN RUN.”. I stood transfixed. The cat and I made eye contact. It seemed to relax a little. Then logic kicked in and I ran as fast as I could all the way to my friend’s house.
No one believed we had come into that close of contact with a cougar and came out unscathed. I guess I should put that on a gratitude list as well! I could see the fur sticking up from her ears, I could see the different shades in her eyeballs. I always assumed it was a female protecting her babies. I could be wrong.
That began my love affair with cats…big and small. Do you have a C word to add to the list today?
