The Spider is a very interesting animal spirit totem, also known as an animal spirit guide or power animal depending upon what culture you are from. If you find your power animal is the Spider, then you want to pay close attention to the traits of a Spider to learn how they apply to you. Of course the first things associated with Spider are fear and weaving. The webs are associated with power, as they are SO strong. Webs also help remind us of the fact that we often choose our own fate. Dreams have to start somewhere and terms like “Dream Weaver” are there for a reason. We can also weave ourselves into some pretty stick situations as well. The “Dream Weaver” thing can work for positive or negative. People sure do fear Spiders. I personally was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider and for the first time in my life, I had a “fear” around Spider. It wasn’t a “ew, I’m so scared of Spiders” fear. It was a realization that my leg was melting and that I needed help fixing it. My cousin, the Doctor, healed me in two weeks time. Now it is a, “I think I will wear long pants and gloves when doing this chore” thing. I learned a whole new level of respect for my friend, the Brown Recluse. When I was looking at the hole in my leg, I studied the Spider’s traits and what they meant for me.
I saw a new trait that I had never noticed before. A Spider’s body is in two sections. On it’s side, it becomes an infinity symbol. I also realized, even though I knew this, that not all Spiders spin webs. That reminds me that we all have our gifts and our “jobs” that only we can do. Spiders are also very fragile. If we drop one or step on one, they will die. They are dangerous and fragile all at the same time. All the legs pointed to their obvious agility. It’s much like the walk for us between the physical and the spiritual worlds and the agility and balance we need for that. Spiders, as an animal spirit totem, will help you find balance in your own life. Spiders are also necessary in a home for killing insects. They move mostly at night and into inaccessible places as not to scare us humans more than they already do! Spiders have long been thought of in some societies the keeper of alphabets and books. To many, the Spider’s web was the first “real” lettering system. In a more modern sense, you will notice in a library that books are dusty and cobwebby if they are not kept up. Do you have a need / desire / wish to write? Spider, as your animal spirit totem, may be prodding you.
