Animal Spirit Totem – Spider

Post image for Animal Spirit Totem – Spider

The Spider is a very interesting animal spirit totem, also known as an animal spirit guide or power animal depending upon what culture you are from.  If you find your power animal is the Spider, then you want to pay close attention to the traits of a Spider to learn how they apply to you. Of course the first things associated with Spider are fear and weaving. The webs are associated with power, as they are SO strong. Webs also help remind us of the fact that we often choose our own fate. Dreams have to start somewhere and terms like “Dream Weaver” are there for a reason. We can also weave ourselves into some pretty stick situations as well. The “Dream Weaver” thing can work for positive or negative. People sure do fear Spiders. I personally was bitten by a Brown Recluse Spider and for the first time in my life, I had a “fear” around Spider. It wasn’t a “ew, I’m so scared of Spiders” fear. It was a realization that my leg was melting and that I needed help fixing it. My cousin, the Doctor, healed me in two weeks time. Now it is a, “I think I will wear long pants and gloves when doing this chore” thing. I learned a whole new level of respect for my friend, the Brown Recluse. When I was looking at the hole in my leg, I studied the Spider’s traits and what they meant for me.

I saw a new trait that I had never noticed before. A Spider’s body is in two sections. On it’s side, it becomes an infinity symbol. I also realized, even though I knew this, that not all Spiders spin webs. That reminds me that we all have our gifts and our “jobs” that only we can do. Spiders are also very fragile. If we drop one or step on one, they will die. They are dangerous and fragile all at the same time. All the legs pointed to their obvious agility. It’s much like the walk for us between the physical and the spiritual worlds and the agility and balance we need for that. Spiders, as an animal spirit totem, will help you find balance in your own life. Spiders are also necessary in a home for killing insects. They move mostly at night and into inaccessible places as not to scare us humans more than they already do! Spiders have long been thought of in some societies the keeper of alphabets and books. To many, the Spider’s web was the first “real” lettering system. In a more modern sense, you will notice in a library that books are dusty and cobwebby if they are not kept up. Do you have a need / desire / wish to write? Spider, as your animal spirit totem, may be prodding you.

If you think your animal spirit totem is a Spider, and you want more information or confirmation, or if you want to find your power animal, lets schedule a reading today. Animals are here to help us more ways than we realize. Let your animal spirit totem help you with it’s powers and traits to guide you to the life you desire.

You know, spider comes into my life a lot it seems like, and even tho i KNOW she does a lot of good – I am still afraid of her. I don’t care if she melts my leg or doesn’t bite… I really would prefer not seeing her… maybe she can really stay hidden as much as possible from my sight, that’d be cool!
Great blog!

I’ve just had my 3rd spider bite in less than 2 years – I know people who have lived their lives in South Africa and not been bitten once!! This one is in my foot and is especially sore (other two were in my arm, and bizzarely all on my left side). I’m curious as to whether I’m just unlucky or if the spider is truly trying to prode me into writing again. Am very interested in the animal totems, still not sure which is mine. Always drawn to cats, but am in awe of most creatures!
Blessings,.<3

This is very interesting. Today was the first time I heard about Animal Totems when speaking to a colleague. I have extremely regular dreams about spiders, or thoughts of spiders will pop into my head for no apparent reason. However, I am fearful of them, so I always thought this was the reason.
I find it interesting that there is a connection to writing as well. As a teenager I wrote a lot of poetry & short stories but this stopped as I go older. However, I am always thinking about picking up the pen again..
This website has been very helpful – now I just need to work out if the Spider is my animal totems – any ideas??

ugh. ugh. uggh!!!! i just had a meeting with the most giant shiny brown spider.. it was sitting on my pillow as i went to get into bed. i was terrified and did capture it, but then i freaked. couldn’t moved. paralyzed with fear that it would get out and then i would have it roaming about climbing on me tonight. ack! this after i received a spider bite only a few days before. now i don’t fear spiders normally.. but this one shook me to my core. i couldn’t stop schuddering. i looked up photos to make sure it wasn’t a brown recluse or a brown widow, and it wasn’t.. but this house is not totally sealed and there are many critters living in here with me. so i started my online search for greater meaning… i needed to know if there was something i wasn’t hearing from them. — i have just sold all my things and am staying with my father and step-mother in a small wee cottage on their property. when i read that spider totems weave the past and present .. i’m thinking that i need to heal whatever i need to with my father so that i can move on. or is it an omen and i just need to get out of here no matter what? do you have any thoughts?

Thank you for this. I have been “followed” by spiders for as long as I can remember, even being mocked about my “spider sense” of being able to tell where a spider is at any time anywhere, even if they’re hidden. It’s as I I can feel them watching me. I freaked out when, about a year ago, I was very depressed and woke to a black widow on my hand. And then another night on my pillow. I’ve never been bitten but am very weary of them, but they are everywhere!!! I even sought the advice of a psychic who told me to write…

Is there any way to fully understand what this “spider thing” is? They seem to come when I’m confused, stressed or just needy. It’s the most uncanny thing, I’ll have a meltdown and cry and the next minute a spider is around… I’d like to know more!

I was bitten by a spider in 2003 just weeks before my wedding. The marriage ended in 2010 due to physical and mental abuse.Shortly after I reconnected with a wonderful man from my childhood.I have also found my spiritual beliefs within this time.In these past two years I have started seeing spiders everywhere. They move, my head turns their direction.I’ve been noticing them more and more lately. Not only do I see them everywhere I tend to find them crawling on me as well.I AM TERRIFIED OF SPIDERS!! I’m talking seeing at the least one a day and having one on me “that I notice anyway” every week or two.The past two weeks I’ve come to the conclusion there’s a reason.I’ve found myself moving away from them and watching rather than freaking out and killing them.I’m not sure if the spider may be my shadow totem or my spiritual totem. This is new to me, maybe you have a few good words that may help me.

I can relate. That brown recluse got me. I’m glad you’re moving back and watching and not freaking. If an animal is around THAT frequently, you can bet they’re there to teach you something. Watch..and learn :)

I took a “Find your Spirit Animal” quiz online (stupid I know) but i was curious. I wanted to find out what mine was and it told me I was a spider. It went on to say “As a Spider, you’re artistic, intuitive, and independent—maybe even a little eccentric. You can become so absorbed in your endeavors that you lose track of the outside world and the people in it. But what you give in return is magic, pure and simple.” I then shared this with my best and closest friend and asked if it was correct and he had yes that it fit me perfectly. The more I thought about it, the more I realized that spiders seem to be attracted to me. Is that a sign?? If so, why am I so afraid of them??

Hello everyone.. great read from all of you. I am here because I just moved to california from Nj to a brand new apartment. Very clean and bright and I keep finding spiders this week really trying to tell me something. I am unfortunately scared of them but I respect them because I am sure they are one of my animal totem. Monday I was walking on the street and a little spider came out of nowhere and got on my wedding finger left hand.. when I Noticed it crowling on my finger I Freaked and blew it away from me. The wedding finger is also the artist creative finger in palmistry so that has me thinking. Tuesday I see a spider that would not be easy to spot sitting on my precious movie collection, I let it go and hide.. but then later on I found it crowling away from the movies up the wall ( I carefully catched it and put it outside) Wednesday I find one waiting for me after my morning shower (I took it outside alive) later on I find one next to my computer(took it outside alive) This week I was bit 3 times by I don’t know what on my lower belly to the right. I wonder if it is little spider bites. They itch like crazy. I am feeling so paranoid as to how many more I am going to find in the house and why is there so much pressure for me to get the message. I guess I have to start writing, creating, weaving, making something. Is spider mad that I am not doing anything with myself right now when I could be doing so much? I can dance, I can write, I can create but I am not. Why now? What’s the rush? What else am I not getting? Blessings to you all.

Wow… This is all too weird! First of all, I’d like to say the way the universe works and is connected is truly something miraculous! The story how I just randomly came across this site is quite interesting. I am a HUGE believer in Quantum Physics and Astrology… I was on famous astrologist’s , Susan Miller, page and she has a link with all of her life changing books… And animal totems were one of them… It struck me for a minute and made me think but I kept moving along and looking at the rest.. So a few minutes later, I was like, “I wanna see what that’s all about!”… So I read the reviews of the book and then googled what my totem was…. I ended up on this page and RIGHT as I did a spider crawled about two inches in front of my face… Like no big deal! That alone gave me the chills… and now that I read what it is about I am just amazed! It explains me to the T and although I have never persued anything in writing, my lifelong goal is to write a published book that is a self help/ motivational/ and inspiring to others! …… To top all of that off… The reason I was looking at Susan Miller’s astrology page in the first place is because she has been talking about a very mean full moon approaching at month’s end which will have a huge affect on everyone… but for a Cancer (my sign), in particular… It will have an impact on my career… That it will be a scary change at first but only to push me into the direction that will be most fulfilling to me.. which I already have been noticing bad things happening with my work.. I think I might just have to believe in this message and take up writing! Thank you! :-D

i am horribly, dreadfully, wretchedly, utterly terrified of spiders…they sometimes make me cry…i used to never kill them bc of my fear of spider karma (you know…when you kill one, the rest of their family and friends come after you)..but this summer, they have been innudating my front porch (and pretty much everywhere i go), so i have resorted to buying a spray to kill them, bc i become almost paralyzed with the fear, and feel at least i have some control…i truly wish i could release the fear, and allow them to exist without freaking out…my mom has told me for years “it’s just charlotte”…but until i see a “some pig” web, that logic does NOT work!…i’m not scared of any other bugs…but spiders seem to have a hold on me..i know it’s silly, but i feel like they mock me….i am also a cancer and extremely sensitive…i am invovled in theatre, and yes am in a show, so my creative juices are flowing…HELP!!!!!

I think my totem animal is a spider. I have been fascinated, and repelled by them for many years. I can vividly recall a spider nightmare that I had more than 30 years ago. Lately I am seeing imaginary spiders ( corner of the eye trickery) all the time and I have also moved to a new home which seems to be a spider nursery!
What does it mean for a person to have a totem animal that they are not only justifiably wary of but, positively phobic about?

Fran – that’s a great question. We can learn lessons from teachers we don’t like. Obviously you need the spider’s wisdom or she wouldn’t keep “showing up”. :))

I’ve always had a special connection to spiders. I was 4 yrs old when my mother found me talking to the laundry cupboard and much to her disgust, I had been yarning to a Redback Spider that I named Henrietta. Poor Henrietta did not last the day :(. I was bitten by an Orb Weaver when I was 10 (despite the bite, I caught her and carried her around with me for the rest of the day and then freed her at my grandmother’s house) and started to fear them but I had to cured that fear when I was forced to work in a museum exhibition that was full of live spiders and other fascinating insects/arachnids. I then remembered that I wasn’t always afraid of them and as a child; I use to catch flies and grasshoppers in the summertime and feed to orb weavers on the clothes line.

I honestly believe that spider totem links with the creative side as well as with the imagination and constant need for knowledge (Sagittarian arts/history student). I’ve since been bitten 3 times in the past 5 years and my boyfriend pointed out to me recently that spiders seem to follow me everywhere; there are always webs/desceased/alive spiders on my side of the bed (even the underside), my drivers side mirror always has fresh webs and when I first met my boyfriend, I was catching a Daddy Longs Legs because my sister has a major phobia of them.

I love Daddy Long Legs too! I always have and they have always been around. I was the one who had to pick them up and move them. I would let them crawl over me. :) Thanks for sharing your story KC!

About a month ago I bought a spider amulet at a store called The Sojourner. I’ve been wearing it ever since, and in that time the number of spiders around my apartment and the path to my job has quadrupled. I’ve found that looking at these spiders gives me feelings of serenity, and that touching the amulet makes me feel warm and safe. One of my friends suggested that the spider might be my totem. What do you think?

I tried to do a story in your mind meditation kind of thing, to reveal my animal totem, and a wierd sort creature with 4 legs and a scary face came out from behind a tree hissing and growling at me, then it turned into a sort of dragon figure then just a black shadow, which was either a wild cat or dog, because of the four legs, I’m not really sure what it meant, and I was hoping you had an idea

Until about 5 years ago, I never really thought much about spiders. I didn’t want to come into contact with one, but I didn’t have a phobia either. I have, however, formed a connection to spiders, so I would never kill one. My connection started when they began appearing to me in spirit form. Sometimes they appear on a regular basis, but then they’ll disappear and not show up for a couple years. I saw them last night for the first time in over two years. They’re pretty big, maybe 6 inches in diameter and their entire body glows. They usually start out across the room from me and work their way towards me until they’re above me. The first time this happened I was confused but I’ve never been scared of them. I would just like to know what they’re trying to tell me. I also see orbs… My one year old son has them around him all the time. Do you think there is a connection? The night before the spiders, my deceased grandfather appeared and spoke to me in a dream. Recently, there seems to be a lot of activity around me and my family. Do you have any insight as to what’s going on?

I didn’t feel “right” yesterday. When I had the chance to look at my aura, I noticed that my sentry (who is a representation of my dog), was engulfed in a spider web, not moving. Then I noticed a big, black spider the size of my body, attached(more like embedded) to the right side of my aura. It feels like it is sucking the energy right out of me. Usually with any unwanted or nagative things in my aura, I flush them out and down into the melted magma in the earth, to be reborn. That always takes care of it. This is different. I can’t get it off. I recently learned Reiki, and feel like I might have taken on something from a friend that I was trying to help. Let me know your thoughts.

As you know, Reiki isn’t about taking energy on, it’s about moving energy through. Take a shower and ask for a “good cleaning” while you’re in there. :)

I have always loved spiders!!! I think they are one of the most beautiful creatures on this Earth. I have always thought my totem/ spirit animal was the Wolf, but now…. I am not too sure anymore. I love to write. I am better at writing my thoughts out than speaking them out, and I have used that through all my life. I am now going to have to do some more soul searching and reflecting. Is it possible to have more than one totem?

We have one Main Totem and then we have Teaching Totems that come in. So yes, it’s not only possible but it’s probable.

I had a dream about an all white spider. I kept seeing him around my room. I’m pretty psychic so even as I was dreaming this i was trying to figure out what it meant. I know spiders are manifestors/ creators and the white I would imagine speaks to purity, higher self, but I’m trying to filter it down to a specific message to me and having trouble.
In the dream, it was just on my floor crawling towards a doorway in a darker room. it was rather large. And at first I actually couldn’t figure out what it was, but then I was like ah ha! It’s a spider, and I even called it a specific spider and was going to google it when I woke up, but then I got a phone call, and now I can’t remember what I had called it :/

I don’t like real spiders nor do I always see them. Ever since I was young maybe 10 years old are younger. Every blue moon I would see this thing that resembled a spider but it was not like any spider I have ever seen on earth.I would always see the spider right when I wake up. I thought for the longest I was just dreaming. So I would keep opening my eyes and closing them and the thing would still be there. Only after a few seconds would it disappear, so I know it is not a dream. Its black with really skinny long legs but its physical appearance is not like any spider I have ever seen. So far years this would go on. One day in my mid 20s, my mom told me she saw this spider thing. She described it exactly the way it appears to me. My mom use to have psychic visions as a child regularly. After hearing this, I knew I wasn’t crazy. A year later I told this psychic, who is actually really good about the recurring spider looking thing. I would say this psychic is usually 95% accurate. She told me the spider had something to do with a relative that has passed a long time ago. She told me not to be scared of it. Ever since that reading I now see the spider in different colors. I don’t know know what to think. I have seen it throughout my life in many different locations( new apts, bf’s houses, etc). I know I am not dreaming..I am awake. I have also seen three spirits throughput my life but that does not happen often. This spider thing freaks me out.

Elizabeth January 27, 2013 at 2:59 pm

I’m wondering why you aren’t trusting the psychic you say is very good with what she said? You have nothing to fear from this spider. If it was going to harm you in some way, it would have years ago.

I have always been surrounded by spiders. I’ve never feared them. They have been a source of joy to me my whole life. I find them fascinating and have embraced the fact that I will always be surrounded by them. I bought a big spider ear band and the woman asked me why I was buying that one…that not many people wanted the spiders. I told her that spiders and I are one and she looked at me and said, “the spider must be your animal totem”. I had no idea what that meant. I stumbled upon this entry and my mouth hit the ground as you described me and my life to a “T”. Thank you for sharing your insight and helping me understand this more clearly!

As someone who once suffered from arachnophobia, I feel as if the spider is my spirit animal. From a small age I was always around spiders. I remember an encounter where I was sitting outside and one crawled onto my arm. He was black and fuzzy, I had named him green eyes. About two years later I found the same type spider in my bed at my grandparents house, but this time I was terrified instead of fascinated.

A few months ago, I was enrolled in a biology class for my studies. My professor had a love of spiders, and taught us a lot about them. I found myself becoming more and more interested in them. They were such different creatures. I came across a video of someone who had a Goliath Bird Eater as a pet, and it had a struggle with shedding and ended up passing away after a surgery to remove its shed. The video spoke to me and I felt great sympathy for the owner. I began to look up more and more videos of tarantulas, and started to fall in love with them. I’m looking to get one as a pet, most likely a Cobalt Blue, once my gecko passes away in the next few years.

Lately, now that I am home from college, I find myself running into spiders often. I see at least one in my room each week, but they don’t bother me. I let them go on with what they do, or try to save them and set them free. I feel like they’re speaking to me. Like we have some sort of connection. It’s like we both do not fear each other. I always saw the wolf and crow as my spirit animals, but I’m beginning to think that the spider is what I have a stronger connection with. There has to be a reason for my profound love for them, as well as the fact that they are continuously reoccurring in my life.

When I was a child I had constant nightmares conserning spiders.
On later years I’ve had incidents with multiple spider bites on my face and neck, I can feel their precence which allows me to always look their way. These past two weeks lead me to reaserch about spiders and their spiritual connection. These two weeks really freaked me out as I have had 2 spiders crawling on my face, one on my arm and one on my lap. I finally took this as a sign to check it up, problem is that I don’t know what they want to say to me. I don’t like them on me but I hate to kill those little bastards so I just let them pass. Is it possible that you send out a type of energy which attracts them? I was also reasently told that I was an empath, (googling that aswell lol)
I’m creative in ideas but nothing else, outgoing and fit with all the people I’ve met. This is a little too much for me at the same time and I don’t know anything about what everything wants me!
I haven’t even turned 19 yet and I suppose my crazy dreams should be posted in another post heh…

Perhaps my experience can be given some meaning:

A large, invisible spirit tarantula. 1st noticed a few months ago above my bed. Not been seen since. About 50cm-1m in diameter and completely invisible just pure energy. Now this morning the 2nd encounter: he walked over my left shoulder while I was having a though/dream about work.

what does this mean?
